Social Studies teachers will be teaching in the Spanish language and therefore
need to have native language-like fluency in Spanish. As not all incoming
students will be fully proficient and/or literate in Spanish, the teacher
will be expected to teach at different levels and adapt course materials
without simplifying the underlying content. Teachers will be expected to
plan and collaborate extensively with each other.

- Bilingualism in Spanish and English
- Ability to teach with Spanish as the language of instruction
- Experience working with urban Middle School students
- Qualifications
to teach Middle School Social Studies
- Knowledge of second language
acquisition theory and practice and literacy issues
- Understanding of
metacognitive skills
- Ability to tie academics to social issues and
reality as well as make it personally relevant
- Ability to help students
negotiate classroom content in order to make it personally meaningful
rather than merely reproduce content as it was presented
- Ability to
target different learning styles, academic levels, and special needs
- Facility at scaffolding course content and breaking down information
- Ability to communicate clear expectations and reach out to students
and families Ability to analyze student data and use it in instructional
planning and individualization
